Exploring the liminal through AI

The looming shadow of AI’s influence on my industry often kept me up at night. One of my favourite adages is, “We can’t go over it. We can’t go under it. We can’t go around it. We’ve got to go through it.” So, I set out to understand this technology that has been editorialized as the end of design as we know it.

I began experimenting with Midjourney, exploring its capabilities both as a professional tool to enhance my workflow and as a creative outlet for my fascination with liminal spaces — those in-between places that evoke both unease and familiarity, anxiety and comfort. By its nature, Midjourney generates imagery that treads the fine line of the uncanny, making it a perfect medium for this exploration.

While there is much to be said about the ethics of AI, this ongoing exploration continues to expand my conceptual toolkit and has evolved into a meditative creative practice. It’s a space where I can freely confront and embrace the uncomfortable.
